was from. This information is transferred to the reply
using the following 'variables':
#FROM# : sender
#TO# : receiver
#SUBJ# : subject
#FORUM# : conference
#DATE# : date of entering the net
#TIME# : hour of entering the net

FIDO FORMAT
In the FidoNet the users can send messages NetMail, which are
usually faster than EchoMail, and much more secure. NetMail
is devoted to private mail, and as such cannot be used for
public messages. NetMail technology is somewhat different
than EchoMail message diffusion and, from the user's point
of view, needs not only the name of the receiver, but the
address of his or her home BBS, provided that it is a
member of FidoNet. The address' format follows:
<zone>:<region>/<node>.<point>
zone : is the largest unit of FidoNet's
organisation and is usually representing
a continent, for example:
1 - northern America
2 - Europe...
region : this unit usually represents a single
country or state, but is divided in
two parts, for instance:
38x - our (of which MicroArt is the
co-ordinator site) region's prefix.
xx0 - depending region
380 - the region of Slovenia
381 - the region of Croatia...
node : A single BBS, member of a certain region.
For instance:
2:380/100 - MicroArt BBS
/101
/102 - depending BBSes...
point : the point is the address of a single user
depending on a node. If we use the address
with the point number, the mail will be
rooted directly to the receiver's home (or
so) computer without stopping even on his
host BBS. This is possible provided that
the receiver HAS the point status, which
for the majority of the users isn't the
case.
If You are answering a message, CHIPS has probably found
the correct address by itself, no matter if the original
message is Echo or NetMail. But if You want to forward
the message, send the answer to a third person or if
You are entering a new message, you will have to type
the address by hand or, if previously saved, pick them
from the picklist.
While assembling the message, CHIPS will add the address
to the very beginning as, for example, the following:
(2:380/100)
Such address will be recognised by the program FidoPCB, as
well as the flag, if following the address.

$1281
STATUS LINE
Type in the status line. It has two meanings:
-the word immediately following the character '#'
(hash) is this way marked to be highlighted. It also
has to follow a certain format. The first character
must be an uppercase 'F', which means a function key.
It must be followed by a number from including 2 to
12 (1 is reserved for the help function). Example:
#F<key number>
Depending on some DOS versions the keys F11 and F12
don't work, so check the situation on your computer.
Note 1: with the hash character we can highlight an
optional word, but if it doesn't follow the above
format, CHIPS won't be able to associate it with a
triggering key.
Note 2: the highlighted word can be collocated almost
anywhere in the status line, but it is strongly
advised you collocate it as the first word in the line.
This is because the mouse will detect the function
area depending on the beginning of the highlighted
word.
We are allowed to highlight a single word only.
- The entire line will be displayed on the top of the
display and will serve as a first reference to what
the function is doing if triggered.

DEFINITION OF THE USER FUNCTIONS
The user can define four functions, which will be
available through the function keys (without Alt
or Ctrl). The functions can be a variety of
external programs, communication programs, for
instance, which are used to operate mail packets,
send currently available replies or receive new
mail. The changes in the reply file during the
function execution, whether it has been deleted
or modified in any way, the change will be
detected and appropriate actions to notify it will
be taken.

IDENTIFICATION STRING
Usually the archiver, used to create a compressed file
can be recognised from the first few characters.
The string, for instance, for PKZIP is "PK". If you
can't figure out the string for your specific
archiver, try comparing some files compressed with
it. If you still cannot find the signature out,
then define the archiver as fourth in the list,
which will make it default and enable it even if
not recognised.

ADDITIONAL PACKET UPDATE PARAMETER
CHIPS saves the information on the changes in the packet
in the packet itself, thus updates it. Usually this
operation would change the packet's date and time.
In most of the archiving utilities this can be avoided
using a specific parameter, which will make your packet
keep the correct date and time. Type the required parameter
into this field. It is STRONGLY advised NOT to enter
parameters with different meanings, as the consequences
would be unpredictable.
The three predefined archivers have this parameter
already set up. Changing them is ill-advised, too.

ARCHIVERS
CHIPS can contemporarily support four different archivers,
while three of them are already predefined:
- PKxxZIP
- ARJ
- LHA
CHIPS can recognise the archiver, used to archive a mail
packet. The archiver is usually related to the BBS,
and is thus used to create reply packets, too.
If your BBS uses an archiver, that cannot be recognised
by CHIPS (has no signature string), define the archiver
as the fourth. That will make it default and enable it
even if it doesn't get recognised. Otherwise, if the
fourth archiver is undefined, CHIPS will notify if the
recognition failed.

Note: only if we choose to edit the header

MESSAGE WRITING SET-UP (1)
Certain switches related to the messages header can be
predefined, the way we don't have to access them every
time we write or modify a reply or message.
- Automatic signature:
The user can set up a text, which will be
appended to the end of your message. It can
be your personal signature, which may be too
complicated to, say, draw every time, but it
can be obviously any other optional closing text,
which is frequently needed. This option can be
(un)selected for every particular message, but
the starting switch position will be always as
selected here.
- Private/public/RSA key/password encoding
This option will be available in the next version
of CHIPS only.
- FidoNet style addressing
FidoNet standards make it possible to send fast private
messages, which travel from sender to receiver without
spreading on the EchoMail conference system or even
stopping on the BBS systems that forward the message
towards the goaled BBS. This system is called NetMail
and requires an additional information which serves as
an address of the receiver. CHIPS automatically finds
the address of the author of the replied message,
regardless on whether the original message was found in
an ordinary EchoMail conference or in a NetMail mailbox.
The only difference is that if the message was found in
the latter the FidoNet style is automatically enabled,
regardless on our selection in the configuration.
Obviously, we can always switch it off and reroute the
reply to an EchoMail conference.
If a valid address cannot be found or we are creating
a new message then we have to enter a correct address
manually or pick it from our personal database.
CHIPS inserts the address in the beginning of the message
in a format recognised by a BBS program called FidoPCB,
which is imminently becoming a standard in FidoNet
to/from PCBoard message transfers.
- Hello text
CHIPS can insert a 'hello' text in every reply. As
intended to hold information on the quoted message, it
is not available when creating new messages, for there
is no required information available.
The information consists of the sender and receiver
names, date and time of the message and other.
This data is transferred to your message through the use
of this variables:
#FROM# : sender of the original message
#TO# : receiver
#SUBJ# : subject of the original message
#FORUM# : the original conference
#DATE# : date when the original message entered
the net
#TIME# : hour when the original message entered
the net
#BBS# : BBS, which we downloaded the mail packet
from
- Message header (as text)
The contents of this feature is quite the same as
in hello text, with the difference, that the format
cannot be changed and that it is, if selected, added
to the reply before editing it, in order to use it as
a reminder. We can then delete it or do whatever else
we want.
$127
MESSAGE WRITING SET-UP
Some switches in the message writing can be predefined
the way we use them most of the times.
These switches are configurable under the option 'Settings 1':
- Auto signature
- Password encoding

- Hello text
- Message header (as text)
Under the option 'Settings 2' are available:
- Quoting string
- Message header editing order
- Tagline selection mode

<BBSNAME>.PTR for QMail and compatibles.
As the formats are 'slightly' different,
CHIPS, for the time being, supports only the
.PNT format.

ATTENTION!!! It shouldn't be an already existing directory
that might contain important data! They would all be
deleted and overwritten, thus unrecoverabely lost!!!
$1223
CHIPS' PACKET DIRECTORY
Directory, where the QWK mail packets are being held. Usually
the same as the DL directory of our communication program.

only one condition it has to fulfill: it has to accept
the ASCII text filename as a parameter. If the file is

CHIPS will conclude that the message has been discarded
and thus abort editing it.
An internal text editor isn't provided, in this version, yet.

MESSAGE POINTER SETTING
CHIPS can set-up the BBS's private message base pointers
off-line, provided that the BBS uses the mail manager
programs MarkMail (tm) or compatibles (.PNT pointer
format) or QMAil (tm) or compatibles (.PTR pointer
format). When it opens a mail packet, CHIPS sets all
the pointers to the current values (after receiving the
packet). The pointers can be modified:
- By hand for the current conference.
- Setting the current conference pointer to the old value,
before receiving the packet.
- Setting all the pointers to the new value, after
receiving the packet.
- Setting all the pointers to the old value.
- We can the decide whether to send the pointers or not.
The option's string changes based on the curent
situation:
if the current situation is that the modified pointers
are to be sent, the string is: don't send new pointers,
indicating the action if we choose this option.
otherwise the string is: send new pointers.
Whatever the change or modification on the pointers is, they
are automatically to be sent, so if we change our mind, we
can choose the last option.
$111911
MANUAL POINTERS SET-UP
The pointer can be set up to any value between 0 and 99999,
but meanwhile CHIPS gives us two orientative values: the
pointer's value before and after receiving the packet.
